What happened to PlusDent?

New PlusDent aligner treatment has ended. PlusDental, the company behind the brand, was bought by Straumann in 2022, and the consumer name in Europe then became DR SMILE. Straumann later sold that DR SMILE business to Impress. The sale completed in September 2024.

If you were a PlusDent patient

  • Do not carry on with old trays until a dentist has checked your teeth in person.
  • Payments or finance: contact the finance company named on your agreement or statements.
  • Attachments still on your teeth, or an old retainer: a dentist can remove the attachments, check the retainer or make a new one.
  • Records: gather your treatment plan and statements, and ask the company for a copy of your records if you need them (details below).

What PlusDent patients were told

On 23 October 2026, plusdent.co.uk still said PlusDent is now DR SMILE and that visitors are passed to DR SMILE customer service. The DR SMILE page it links to, a PlusDental FAQ on drsmile.co.uk, could not be reached when we checked. On 22 October the site returned a server error. On 23 October the drsmile.co.uk domain name did not resolve, so no website could be reached at that address. That tells you the page is unavailable, not whether DR SMILE still answers PlusDent queries another way. The last archived copy, captured on 8 February 2026, dates from the 2022 handover. It is the most detailed record of what PlusDent patients were told, but its contact forms and promises may no longer work.

Split your question by type, because each goes to a different place.

Your questionWhat the archived DR SMILE FAQ saidWhat to do now
Payments or financePayments continued as usual; questions went to your billing service providerContact the finance company named on your agreement or statements
RetainersWire retainer orders were cancelled and refunded; DR SMILE said it provided a guarantee for PlusDent wire retainers, which carried a 2-year guaranteeA dentist or orthodontist can check an old retainer or make a new one; see care after aligners
Pain, fit or whether to continueUse the DR SMILE contact form if pain lasted several daysSee a dentist in person before carrying on with old trays

The archived FAQ also said the PlusDent app closed on 21 December 2022, so there are no app check-ups or tray reminders.

How PlusDent became DR SMILE, then Impress

PlusDental, legally Sunshine Smile GmbH, provided clear aligner treatment through dentists in clinics across Europe, including the UK, and traded as PlusDent on plusdent.co.uk. Straumann agreed to buy it on 20 May 2022, and its half-year report says the purchase completed on 1 July 2022. Straumann already owned DR SMILE, a separate aligner brand with treatment provided by dentists, and moved its European consumer aligner business under that name, retiring PlusDent.

On 13 August 2024 Straumann agreed to sell the DR SMILE business to Impress, the Barcelona-based clinic group, keeping a 20 percent stake in the combined company. Its 2024 annual report says the sale completed in September 2024. Straumann said at the time that Impress would keep supporting DR SMILE patients then in treatment.

Impress already ran UK clinics under its own name; the Impress review describes that offer. An old PlusDent patient was not automatically placed on a new Impress treatment plan.

Records to have ready

Before you contact anyone, gather what you can: your treatment plan, the number of the aligner you are on and how many are left, any retainer, your finance agreement and payment statements, and emails from PlusDent or DR SMILE. If you need your records from a company, the Information Commissioner's Office says you can ask an organisation for a copy of your personal information. This is called a subject access request, and organisations usually have one month to respond.

What you can look at instead

For aligner treatment in the UK now, these pages explain clinic and at-home routes that are currently available. Impress is relevant because it bought the DR SMILE business and already treats patients in its own UK clinics. It is one current option to read about.
