How treatment works

You either take impressions at home with the kit and mail them back, or book a free 30-minute 3D scan at a SmileStudio. There are currently three, inside dental offices in Central Park and Tribeca in New York City and Green Hills in Nashville. A licensed doctor then creates your plan and all your aligners are made and shipped to you. All-day aligners take four to six months on average. Nighttime aligners are worn for ten hours in a row and take six to nine months. SmileSet claims the result is the same as all-day wear, which is its own claim rather than an independent finding. Two virtual visits with your prescribing doctor are included.

SmileSet does not publish how long it takes from returning your impressions to receiving your aligners, and that wait is separate from the four to six months of wear. Ask for an expected delivery date before you pay for treatment.

What you pay

Prices checked October 26, 2026. With one set of retainers for both arches at $199, the bundle comes to $1,594. If you buy the $49.99 kit first, SmileSet does not say whether that fee comes off the treatment price, so ask; if it does not, the total is $1,643.99. Check the total at checkout.

SmileSet offers Affirm, Klarna and Afterpay at checkout, and advertises payments "as low as $3 a day with qualifying credit". Terms and interest depend on the lender, so ask for the total repayable before you accept. FSA and HSA funds can be used, and SmileSet suggests checking whether your dental insurance covers orthodontics.

What customers say

SmileSet's Trustpilot profile showed a score of 4.1 from about 49,800 reviews on October 23, 2026, with a Trustpilot notice that the profile was merged with one or more other profiles, so some reviews were first posted on another profile.

So the total is not a count of customers of SmileSet's current service, and it does not show which products or years the reviews cover.

Reviewers often praise its support staff. The Better Business Bureau gives it an A rating, but the 18 customer reviews there average 2.6 out of 5. Among the complaints we read there in October 2026, the ones that came up most were retainers that do not fit, long production delays and repeated requests for new impressions; that is not a measure of how often these problems happen. Many complaints are from people who describe themselves as former SmileDirectClub patients ordering retainers, so if you are one, ask whether your retainers will be made from fresh impressions rather than an old scan.

Clinical oversight

SmileSet names six dentists and orthodontists in its network, including Dr. Robert Sims, an orthodontist, and Dr. Eric Neuer, also an orthodontist. Each plan is approved by a state-licensed dental professional, but you will not know in advance which one. Ask who your prescribing doctor is and whether they are licensed in your state. A scan at a SmileStudio records your teeth. It is not an examination, and SmileSet recommends keeping your regular dental checkups. Have a checkup with X-rays from your own dentist before you start, and get any gum problems, cavities or loose teeth treated first.

Retainers, refinements and refunds

Retainers are not included, so budget at least $149 for them at the end of treatment. The public terms we checked do not make clear whether additional aligners are included. Get the terms for your plan in writing. SmileSet offers a 30-day fit guarantee: if your aligners or retainers do not fit, or you no longer need them, you can return them for a full refund within 30 days of receiving them, or ask for a free new kit and replacements. Elsewhere it is called a 30-day money-back guarantee after starting treatment, so ask which date the 30 days run from. The terms are with OrthoTech, LLC and require disputes to go to binding arbitration, with no class actions.

What the SmileDirectClub link means for you

SmileSet says it is powered by SmileDirectClub technology, and figures on its site such as "2M+ transformations" and "100+ patents" describe SmileDirectClub's past, not SmileSet's own customers.

That history shows the technology was widely used, not that it is clinically better, and it does not tell you how SmileSet itself handles orders, delays or refunds.

If you were a SmileDirectClub patient, SmileSet is a separate company and your old guarantee does not carry over. If you want retainers, ask whether they will be made from new impressions rather than old records.

Who this may suit

SmileSet may suit an adult with mild crowding or gaps who has had a recent dental checkup, lives near New York City or Nashville if they want a free scan, and values virtual visits with a named prescribing doctor.

It is less suited to anyone who wants retainers included, needs certainty about extra aligners, or has a bite problem that needs an in-person examination.

• Which doctor will prescribe my plan, and are they licensed in my state?
• Does the 30-day refund run from delivery or from when I start wearing the aligners?
• If my teeth do not finish where planned, are extra aligners included, and if not, what do they cost?
• Does the kit fee come off the treatment price?
• If I was a SmileDirectClub patient, will my retainers be made from new impressions?

SmileSet offers the same price for day or night aligners, a free scan in a few cities and named doctors. Retainers cost extra, the terms do not make clear whether extra aligners are included, and complaints we read mention fit and delays, especially for retainers. Confirm your total including retainers, and the start date for the 30-day refund, before you order.
