Invisalign treatment
Invisalign, the best-known clear aligner system in the US, is worth paying for when you want a clinician to manage a more involved case: packages run from a few aligners for a small relapse to comprehensive treatment for crowding and bite problems. The trade-off is price and comparability, because practices set their own fees and what a fee covers varies more than the brand name suggests.
- Price
- $3,500 to $8,800Set by your practice. Comprehensive fees at the practices we sampled ran from $3,500 to $8,800. Ask whether retainers and extra aligners are included; insurance or health savings (HSA) and flexible spending (FSA) funds may cover part. Details
- How you start
- An exam and 3D scan with an Invisalign-trained dentist or orthodontist.
- Who checks your progress
- Your treating dentist or orthodontist, with checkups that may mix office visits and remote progress checks.
It is made by Align Technology and sold only through dentists and orthodontists, who examine you, take X-rays and a 3D scan, plan the tooth movements and see you through treatment. Many US orthodontists and dentists offer it. Published prices for comprehensive treatment in the sample below range from $3,500 to $8,800. For a minor problem, ask whether a shorter package or another system would do at a lower fee, and if you doubt you will wear removable trays most of the day, consider braces.

Price
Invisalign does not publish prices. It says the cost is usually comparable to braces and depends on how complex your case is and how many aligners you need. The examples on its cost page are hypothetical totals of $5,490 to $7,000 before insurance. Invisalign cites 2021 data from a payments company, OrthoFi, showing average orthodontic insurance coverage of $1,772 for Invisalign patients, and flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) funds can also be used. Payment plans are set by each practice.
What some practices charge
| Practice | Fee published | What the practice says the fee covers |
|---|---|---|
| Ogden Orthodontics, Central Florida | Touch-Up $2,495; Comprehensive $4,895 | Comprehensive includes three refinement rounds, with extra rounds at $500 each. Touch-Up excludes refinements. |
| Limestone Hills Orthodontics, Austin, Texas | Comprehensive or Teen from $4,700 | Scans, check-ups, refinements and a first set of clear plastic retainers. Vivera retainers are a $350-per-arch upgrade. |
| Smile Pop, New York City | Comprehensive $3,500 to $8,800; touch-up $3,200 to $4,200 | Scans, check-ups, attachments, IPR (reshaping between teeth), one round of refinements if needed and retainers. Treating one arch costs slightly less. |
Checked October 26, 2026 on each practice's website. Smile Pop's FAQ page gives different figures, $6,900 to $7,800 for comprehensive treatment with refinements "as needed", which shows why the written agreement matters more than a web page. Three orthodontic practices that publish prices are a limited sample, not a national average. The same practices list metal braces at $4,550 (Ogden, metal or ceramic) and from $4,000 (Limestone Hills), so comprehensive Invisalign cost $345 and $700 more there.
The gap between a touch-up and a comprehensive fee at the same office matters more than the brand: before comparing quotes, find out which package each one is for.
If you finance through the practice, ask for the total you will repay as well as the monthly amount. Ogden and Limestone Hills both advertise 0% in-house plans, which spread the fee without adding interest.
Offers and discount codes
We have no verified current offer from Invisalign. That does not mean there is no promotion: we list one only after checking it. The prices in this review are Invisalign's prices without any promotion.
If Invisalign shows a discount or a code when you visit, check its end date and terms on Invisalign's own site before you rely on it, and compare the total you would pay. We list an offer only after checking it on the provider's site and recording its terms, including any end date the provider gives.
How treatment works
- Consultation and records. The dentist or orthodontist examines your teeth and gums, takes any X-rays they need and makes a 3D scan, usually with an iTero scanner. Ogden and Limestone Hills, two of the practices above, offer the first consultation free.
- Plan and preview. The clinician designs the tooth movements in Align's ClinCheck software and shows you a 3D preview. The preview is a plan, not a promise of the final result. Settle the fee and what it covers before you approve the plan and aligners are ordered.
- Waiting for aligners. Making and shipping the aligners "can take several weeks", according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Smile Pop tells patients two to three weeks. This wait comes before treatment starts.
- Fitting. At the fitting visit the clinician may bond attachments, small tooth-colored bumps that help the aligners grip, and may do IPR, polishing a little enamel between teeth to make space. You get your first aligners and wear them 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out to eat and to drink anything except water.
- Active treatment. You switch to the next aligner on the schedule your clinician sets, usually every one or two weeks. The AAO says check-ups are typically every six to ten weeks, and some practices replace some visits with photo check-ins through the My Invisalign app. The AAO gives eight to 12 months as typical for mild crowding and a couple of years for complex cases.
- Refinements. If teeth fall behind the plan, the clinician takes a new scan and orders more aligners. Your contract decides whether that costs extra.
- Retainers. When active treatment ends you move to retainers, which you wear long term to stop teeth moving back.
Day to day, attachments are visible up close, many people lisp for the first few days, and new aligners usually feel tight for a day or two. Our guides cover eating and drinking and cleaning aligners.
Which Invisalign package you are quoted for
Invisalign is a family of packages, and the one your clinician orders shapes the price and how many corrections are covered. Align's practitioner materials list these main adult options:
| Package | Aligners | Extra aligners in the package Align sells to the practice |
|---|---|---|
| Express | Up to 7 | One additional set within 6 months |
| Lite | Up to 14 | One additional set within 1 year |
| Moderate | Up to 20 | One additional set within 2 years |
| Comprehensive | No limit | Either unlimited sets for 5 years or up to 3 sets within 3 years |
Express and Lite are for mild crowding or spacing. Moderate allows more stages, and Comprehensive has no aligner limit, so it covers the longest and most complex plans. Some features, such as wear indicators and aligners that move the lower jaw forward, are listed only with it. Invisalign Go is a separate package for general dentists, limited to the front and side teeth. Invisalign Teen includes wear indicators, which Align says show whether aligners are being worn; a laboratory study found the dots also fade in water and drinks, so treat them as an estimate rather than a measure of hours, and Invisalign First is for early treatment in younger children while baby teeth remain. Our guide to aligners and braces for children and teenagers covers that decision.
The extra-aligner allowance is between Align and your practice. It is not your contract. A practice can set its own limits, charge for refinement visits or exclude refinements entirely, as Ogden does on its Touch-Up fee. Ask which package your plan uses, how many refinement rounds your fee covers and for how long, and what happens if you need more.
If your case turns out to need more than the package allows, the clinician may have to upgrade it, which can change your fee. Ask how that would be priced before you start.
What we like
- Treatment matched to the case
Packages range from a handful of aligners for a minor relapse to comprehensive treatment for bite correction.
- Hands-on care
You are examined and scanned in person before anything is made, and the clinician checks progress throughout treatment.
- Easy to compare quotes
Invisalign is offered by many orthodontists and dentists, and insurance, FSA and HSA funds can reduce the cost.
What to be aware of
- Fees are hard to compare
The same brand name can cover a touch-up or a comprehensive package, with different refinement and retainer terms.
- Often more expensive than braces
At both sampled practices that list braces, comprehensive Invisalign cost $345 to $700 more than metal braces.
- Results depend on wear
Removable aligners only work if you wear them 20 to 22 hours a day.
Clinical oversight
You are a patient of the practice, not of Align.
The treating dentist or orthodontist diagnoses your case, approves the plan and decides when to move to the next stage, so choosing the clinician is as important as choosing the brand.
Orthodontists have two to three years of specialty training after dental school, while general dentists can offer Invisalign after Align's training. For bite problems, a child or teen who is still growing, or a case another dentist has called complex, it is worth seeing an orthodontist.
Ask how many Invisalign cases the clinician treats, who you will see at each visit and whether check-ups are in person or through photos. Invisalign's Doctor Locator lists trained practices near you; it is a directory, not a quality rating. Align's Smile Concierge service can answer general questions and help book a first appointment, but fit problems, lost aligners and complaints go to your practice. You can check a license with your state dental board, which is also where complaints go if the practice cannot resolve them. Our guide on what clear aligners can and cannot fix explains the cases that may need braces or other treatment.
Retainers, refinements and refunds
Everyone needs retainers after aligner treatment to stop teeth drifting back, and your clinician tells you how often to wear them. Wearing a retainer is a clinical need, not a subscription: you buy retainers from your practice when you need them. Some practices supply Align's Vivera retainers; others use their own clear plastic retainers or a fixed wire. Prices vary: Limestone Hills charges $150 per arch for a replacement clear plastic retainer made from the model on file, and $350 per arch for Vivera. Ask whether the first set is included, which type you get and what replacements cost.
If you lose or break an aligner, contact the practice. Depending on where you are in treatment, the clinician may move you to the next aligner, have you go back to the previous one or order a replacement, which may cost extra under your contract. Keep your previous aligners in their case for this reason.
Refunds, transfers and changes of plan depend on your practice contract. If you might move during treatment, ask whether another Invisalign practice could take over and what you would pay. For teens, Align runs an Invisalign Teen Guarantee that lets families switch treatment within the first 12 months. The terms come from the provider and are not published on Align's page, so ask for them in writing.
Alternatives worth comparing
| Option | How it differs from Invisalign | Price context |
|---|---|---|
| Metal or ceramic braces | Fixed to the teeth, so they work without you remembering to wear them. More visible, with some food limits. | $4,000 to $4,600 at the two practices above that list braces |
| ClearCorrect | A similar dentist-provided system from Straumann, with its own lab packages for revisions and retainers | Practice quote |
| Spark | Ormco's dentist-provided aligners, often offered by orthodontists alongside Invisalign | Practice quote |
| Angel Aligner | A dentist-provided system with Pro and Select ranges | Limestone Hills lists Angel from $4,000, against $4,700 for Invisalign |
| Motto | General dentists at Aspen Dental offices, mild to moderate cases | $2,999, including one set of retainers |
Many orthodontists offer more than one system, so you can ask a single practice to compare its fees for each. A lower fee for a limited plan is not the same product as comprehensive treatment: compare the package, the refinements covered and the retainers, not just the total. If you are weighing Invisalign against at-home aligners, read Invisalign and at-home aligners and clear aligners and braces.
What the evidence shows
Most claims about Invisalign come from Align itself. Its statement that SmartTrack material moves teeth more predictably compares it with older single-layer aligner plastic, based on Align's own data. Its teen marketing says Invisalign Teen gives results equivalent to braces and can finish months faster; those are manufacturer claims, and the AAO says clear aligners have "no built-in speed advantage" over braces.
Online reviews mostly describe a practice rather than the aligners, because the practice sets the fee, the visits and the aftercare. Read reviews of the specific office and clinician, and look for comments about how problems such as poorly fitting aligners or extra refinements were handled. We have not treated patients with Invisalign or surveyed its customers.
Who this may suit
Invisalign makes most sense if you want removable aligners with an orthodontist or experienced dentist in charge, particularly for crowding, bite problems or a teen who needs supervision. If your plan has an orthodontic benefit, ask the practice to check it before you start: Invisalign says many dental plans cover it the same way as braces, so the benefit can take a real share off the fee.
It is less suited to someone with only a small cosmetic gap who wants the lowest price, or to anyone unlikely to wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. For them, a limited package, another dentist-provided system or braces may be better value.
Questions worth asking before paying
- Which Invisalign package is my quote based on, and why?
- How many refinement rounds does my fee cover, and for how long?
- Which retainers are included, and what will replacements cost?
- Are you an orthodontist, and how many Invisalign cases do you treat?
- How often will I be seen in person, and what happens if I lose an aligner or move away?
- What would braces cost here for the same case?
Bottom line
Invisalign is an established option for dentist-provided treatment when you want removable aligners managed in person by a clinician. Compare the clinician, the package and the written quote, including any further aligners and retainers. At the two sampled practices that list both, comprehensive Invisalign cost $345 to $700 more than metal braces. The brand name tells you less than the package and the practice do, so ask which package you are being quoted for, compare two or three practices on the same terms, and choose the clinician as carefully as the system.
