Spark aligners

By Aligners.co Editorial Team

Spark, made by the orthodontic supplier Ormco, is a sound choice if an experienced orthodontist prefers it or offers better terms on refinements and retainers with it. Choose it for the clinician, not the brand: one practice that publishes fees charges the same for Spark as for Invisalign, so get quotes for both for the same case.

Price
$4,000 to $7,100Set by your practice; two practices publish $4,000 to $7,100. Ask whether retainers and extra aligners are part of the fee. Orthodontic insurance may cover part.
How you start
An exam and 3D scan with a Spark dentist or orthodontist.
Who checks your progress
Your treating dentist or orthodontist, in person at the office.

Spark is provided through dentists and orthodontists who examine you, plan your treatment and see you in the office, and many orthodontists offer it alongside Invisalign. Ormco's claims about clearer, more stain-resistant plastic come from its own data.

Price

Spark has no national price; each practice sets its own fee. Two US practices that publish Spark fees:

PracticeSpark fee publishedWhat the practice says is included
SC Orthodontics, Valencia, CaliforniaShort case (6 to 10 months) $4,000 to $5,400; standard (12 to 16 months) $6,000; complex (18 months or more) $6,600 to $7,100All visits and adjustments, emergency visits, X-rays and scans, first retainers. Spark is priced the same as Invisalign; metal braces cost about $1,500 less.
Innova Smiles, Marlborough, MassachusettsUp to $6,000 standard fee for a complex caseAll trays, attachments, in-office monitoring and two rounds of refinements. One page says final retainers are included, another says they are priced separately.

Checked October 26, 2026.

Two practices are a limited sample, not an average, and the conflicting retainer wording at Innova shows why the written estimate matters more than a web page.

SC Orthodontics says most PPO plans cap the fee about $700 lower and then pay $1,000 to $2,000 of it, and offers 0% in-house plans from $125 a month. Orthodontic insurance and health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) funds can be used for Spark as for braces. If you finance through a lender rather than the practice, ask for the APR and the total repayable.

Offers and discount codes

We have no verified current offer from Spark. That does not mean there is no promotion: we list one only after checking it. The prices in this review are Spark's prices without any promotion.

If Spark shows a discount or a code when you visit, check its end date and terms on Spark's own site before you rely on it, and compare the total you would pay. We list an offer only after checking it on the provider's site and recording its terms, including any end date the provider gives.

How treatment works

  1. Exam and records. The dentist or orthodontist examines you and takes a 3D scan, along with any X-rays they need. SC Orthodontics includes X-rays and a scan in its free consultation.
  2. Plan and preview. The clinician plans the tooth movements in Ormco's Spark software and can show you a simulation. It shows the intended movement, not a guaranteed result. Agree the fee and what it covers before you approve the plan.
  3. Waiting for aligners. Ormco makes the aligners and ships them to the office. The AAO says manufacturing aligners "can take several weeks"; this wait comes before treatment starts.
  4. Fitting. The clinician may bond attachments, small tooth-colored bumps that help the aligners grip, and may plan IPR, polishing a little enamel between teeth to make space. Spark plans can also use elastics or bite ramps for bite correction.
  5. Active treatment. You wear the aligners about 22 hours a day and change them on your clinician's schedule; Ormco's materials give one week as standard, or two at the clinician's choice. The AAO says check-ups are typically every six to ten weeks, and some practices use virtual check-ins.
  6. Refinements and retainers. If teeth fall behind, the clinician rescans and orders more aligners. At the end you move to retainers.

If you lose an aligner or one stops fitting, contact the office and keep your recent aligners. Do not skip ahead or force a tray that will not fit fully over your teeth. Our guides cover cleaning aligners and eating and drinking.

Spark treatment options

Ormco sells Spark to practices in three packages:

PackageAlignersRefinements in the package Ormco sells to the practice
Spark 10Up to 10 stages, for relapse, minor problems or straightening before other dental workOne refinement
Spark 20Up to 20 stages, for moderate problemsTwo refinements
Spark AdvancedNo limit for five years, for complex casesUnlimited

Each can treat the upper or lower teeth (one arch) or both. These terms come from Ormco's international pages and doctor brochure. We could not confirm that the same packages apply in the US, so check them with your clinician.

The refinement allowance is between Ormco and your practice. Your contract can differ: Innova Smiles includes two refinement rounds in its fee and itemizes anything beyond that. Ask which package your plan uses, how many refinement rounds your fee covers, and what happens if you need more.

What we like

  • In-person care

A dentist or orthodontist examines you, plans treatment and sees you in the office.

  • Packages for minor to complex cases

Spark Advanced allows unlimited aligners and refinements for five years under the package sold to practices.

  • You can see the plan first

Ask to see the simulation before the aligners are ordered.

What to be aware of

  • Not shown to be cheaper

One practice that publishes fees charges the same for Spark as for Invisalign.

  • Material claims are Ormco's own

Claims that TruGEN is clearer and stains less come from Ormco's data.

  • Inclusions vary

Refinements and retainers depend on both the package and your practice contract.

Clinical oversight

Your dentist or orthodontist is responsible for your treatment and sees you in person. Spark is offered by both orthodontists and general dentists in the US, so ask which you are seeing. Orthodontists complete two to three years of specialty training after dental school. For bite problems, a growing child or a case another dentist has called complex, it is worth seeing an orthodontist.

Ormco's doctor locator groups Spark providers into tiers based on how many Spark cases they complete each year. Ormco says the tiers show experience with Spark, not quality of care. Check your clinician's license with your state dental board, which also handles complaints a practice cannot resolve. For clinical problems, lost aligners or billing, your contact is the practice, not Ormco.

Retainers, refinements and refunds

You will need retainers after treatment to stop teeth moving back, and your clinician sets the type and how often to wear them. Ormco makes Spark retainers, which your practice orders and prices; practices can also make their own clear retainers. Ask whether the first set is included, as SC Orthodontics includes it and Innova Smiles may not, and what replacements cost.

Refinements depend on both the Spark package and your contract, as above. Refunds, transfers if you move and changes of plan are set by your practice contract, so ask for those terms in writing.

Alternatives worth comparing

If your practice offers more than one system, ask why it recommends Spark for your case and whether the fee or refinement terms differ. Our guide to clear aligners and braces compares the two approaches.

What the evidence shows

Ormco says Spark's TruGEN plastic is clearer, more comfortable and more stain-resistant than "the leading aligner brand". Those comparisons are marked as Ormco's data on file, not independent studies. Ormco also says Spark has produced good finishes in moderate Class I and II cases in trials and practice, without naming the studies on its consumer pages.

Clinicians who use Spark praise its planning software, but that is professional preference, not evidence that patients get better results.

Online reviews mostly describe practices, not Spark itself, so read reviews of the office and clinician you are considering. We have not treated patients with Spark or surveyed its customers.

Who this may suit

Spark suits someone whose chosen orthodontist or dentist recommends it, especially if the practice's Spark terms on refinements and retainers are as good as or better than its Invisalign terms.

If price is the deciding factor, compare the practice's fee for each system and for braces, because the fees we found do not show Spark as the cheaper option.

Questions worth asking before paying

  • Why do you recommend Spark rather than another system for my case?
  • Which Spark package is my plan based on, and how many refinement rounds does my fee cover?
  • Are the first retainers included, and what do replacements cost?
  • How many Spark cases do you treat each year, and are you an orthodontist?
  • How often will I be seen in person, and what happens if I lose an aligner?
  • What would braces or Invisalign cost here for the same case?

Bottom line

Spark is a credible dentist-provided alternative to Invisalign, best chosen because a clinician you trust recommends it and offers good terms, not because of Ormco's material claims or an expected saving. Ask which package your plan uses, get refinements and retainers itemized in writing, and compare the same practice's fee for other systems and braces.
