Oral-B Genius 9000

Our verdict

Keep a working Genius 9000. It has a round oscillating-rotating head, the type of brush with the most trial evidence, plus a pressure light and timer, and its Pro heads are cheap and sold everywhere. A newer iO brush adds Oral-B's micro-vibrations, better app tracking and a nicer display, but we found no independent trial comparing the Genius 9000 with an iO, so replacing a working one is a choice about features rather than a proven better clean.

Buying one new is harder to justify. Stock is scarce, the newest iO models cost about the same or less, and an old boxed unit may have sat on a shelf for years. If you find one, compare it with an iO2 or iO3 first, and do not pay a price close to an iO6.

Is it still sold?

The Genius 9000 dates from 2016. Oral-B's UK site now features only iO brushes in its electric toothbrush range, and its brush head guidance describes Genius, Smart, Vitality and Pro brushes as earlier models. That is not the same as discontinued: Vitality and Pro brushes are still sold.

What we found on 29 October 2026 was scattered stock rather than a current product. idealo listed one rose gold unit at £129.49 from a single seller, with only one left. Lookfantastic listed the rose gold version at £116 but marked it as coming soon, so it could not be ordered. Amazon UK showed the white version as unavailable.

So treat any new Genius 9000 as old stock, and anything else as second hand.

What it does

• Six cleaning modes. Daily Clean, Pro Clean, Sensitive, Whitening, Gum Care and Tongue Cleaning, according to the UK retail listing and the original 2021 review.
• Pressure sensor. A light ring around the top of the handle turns red if you press too hard. It works without the app.
• Timer. A two-minute timer that signals every 30 seconds to move to the next quarter of your mouth.
• Position detection in the app. The handle has a motion sensor, and the Oral-B app uses it, with your phone mounted on the mirror, to show which areas you have covered. The box includes a suction-cup phone holder for this.

The Oral-B app still lists Genius brushes as compatible as of October 2026. The newer features are not for this model: the listing says 3D tracking is for the iO9, and AI Brushing Recognition for iO brushes and the Genius X. Your phone needs Bluetooth 4.0 or later. Oral-B also says it cannot guarantee every phone will connect reliably, which matters more as phones and the app move on.

The brush works fully without the app. For most people the pressure light and timer are the parts that change how they brush.

Charging and battery

According to Oral-B's Genius 9000 manual, a full charge takes about 12 hours. Editions of the manual differ on how long it lasts: one says up to 12 days, a later one at least two weeks, both based on brushing twice a day for two minutes. When the battery runs low, a red light flashes and the motor slows. Once it is empty, it needs at least 30 minutes on the charger for one clean.

The travel case is the part people most often misunderstand.

• It charges the brush through its own power cord, plugged into the mains.
• It has a USB port, but that port only charges another device, such as your phone, while the case is plugged in. You cannot charge the brush from a USB socket.
• UK listings describe a two-pin plug for a bathroom shaver socket, so you need a shaver adaptor for an ordinary three-pin socket.
• Oral-B says to use only the cord supplied with the case. If yours is lost, buy a genuine replacement case or cord for the Genius rather than an unbranded lead.

The battery is not replaceable. The manual says opening the handle destroys it and voids the warranty. When the battery fades, the handle has reached the end of its life.

Brush heads and running costs

The Genius 9000 takes Oral-B's Pro range of round heads, such as CrossAction, Sensitive Clean, Precision Clean and 3D White. It does not take iO heads. Retail listings for Pro heads say they fit Oral-B rechargeable brushes except iO and Pulsonic, so check the pack before you buy. Oral-B advises a new head every 3 months, or sooner if worn, and also after dropping the brush.

On 29 October 2026, Superdrug listed a 4-pack of Pro CrossAction heads at £10.49 for collection in store, and Argos at £19.50. Over three years, one head every 3 months means 12 heads. Even counting a head from the box, you need three 4-packs, so this is the cash for heads, before delivery charges:

For comparison, iO heads were £25 per 4-pack on offer from Oral-B's shop on the same day, or £75 for three years. Keeping a working Genius therefore saves the cost of a new handle and a little on heads too.

Use genuine heads. The manual says the warranty is void if damage to the handle is caused by non-Oral-B heads.

Guarantee if you buy one now

Oral-B's guarantee lasts 2 years from purchase and applies to new products. Oral-B UK ended its optional third year of cover for brushes bought after 26 September 2026, so a Genius bought now gets 2 years at most. Keep the receipt, and buy from a retailer rather than a private seller if you want that cover.

A second-hand brush should be treated as having no guarantee, and its battery may be well worn.

Who should choose what

• Keep it if your Genius still holds a charge for several days. Buy genuine Pro heads and keep the original cord for the case.
• Replace it when the battery fades, the handle stops charging or the app stops connecting with your phone and you rely on it. An iO2 or iO3 is enough if you only use the pressure light and timer.
• Buy remaining stock only from a retailer, with a guarantee, and for less than an iO with the features you want.

During aligner treatment

The case is useful if you need to brush before your aligners go back in at work or when travelling, but remember it needs a mains socket and the right plug. Keep the brush for your teeth, and clean your trays separately as described in our guide to cleaning aligners.
