Who is behind PlusDent?

PlusDent started out as SunshineSmile. Based in Berlin, SunshineSmile was founded in 2017. Originally there were clinics in major German cities and they have expanded to Austria, Switzerland, the UK, France, Spain and the Netherlands.

Once you’ve attended an appointment at a clinic, the rest of your treatment can be carried out at home.

Today, PlusDent has multiple clinics around the UK and partners with dentists that are General Dental Council registered.

To start your treatment, you can visit a practice. Here's a full list of locations:

Bath, Birmingham Central, Birmingham Edgbaston, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hartlepool, Isle of Man, Isleworth, Lancaster, Liverpool, London Barbican, London Bridge, London Edgware, London Hackney, London Hammersmith, London Hampstead, London Harley Street, London Holborn, London Southwark, Manchester, Manchester St Ann's Square, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield and Southampton. Who can use PlusDent aligners?

Clear aligners may be suitable if you have crooked or overcrowded teeth. They may also be suitable for spaces or gaps that you’d like to reduce. Aligners can’t treat the most severe cases but are well suited for mild and moderate issues that might be affecting your confidence.

You may not be able to use clear aligners if you have problem wisdom teeth, cavities or gum disease.

To find out if you’re eligible for treatment, you’ll first have to visit one of the PlusDent clinics, but it's free to do so. There, qualified dentists will check the condition of your teeth. You may not be able to use clear aligners if you have problem wisdom teeth, cavities or gum disease. Your case will also be individually considered if you already have implants or crowns. These may not stop you from using aligners but could make your treatment more challenging. If you have veneers, you won’t be eligible for PlusDent aligner treatment.

Your initial consultation, to see if you’re suitable, will be completely free of charge. This includes a 3D scan and a chat to a licensed dentist.

How are the dental aligners made?

PlusDent’s clear aligners are made using BPA free plastics. Your aligners will be made to fit your mouth, with each set moving your teeth by a maximum of 0.2mm. Using many different sets of aligners, you’ll slowly reshape your smile.

To get your aligners, you’ll first attend a 30-minute appointment in a clinic. There are four in the UK, and most customers will only need to visit theirs once. Visiting the clinic costs absolutely nothing and includes a 3D scan of your teeth.

If you’re suitable for clear aligner treatment, you’ll receive a customised treatment plan. Your plan will show the projected results, using a 3D simulation.

Aligners are made in a Berlin laboratory, sent to you in the mail. They usually take between 3-4 weeks to arrive. You’ll receive all of your aligners at the same time, and will need to switch from one set to another as you make your way through the treatment. PlusDent’s smartphone app will keep you on track with regular notifications.

What treatment options are available?

PlusDent’s service includes only one type of dental treatment. All customers get clear aligners that will slowly move their teeth.

You should wear your aligners for roughly 22 hours each day. Aligners should be taken out for eating, when you’re drinking something other than water, and when you’re brushing your teeth.

PlusDent’s service includes only one type of dental treatment. All customers get clear aligners that will slowly move their teeth.

When you wear aligners, you’ll need to brush your teeth after every single meal. Any food stuck to your teeth can be trapped beneath the aligners. You’ll also want to clean your aligners using your toothbrush and a mild soap. In some cases, a sterilising tablet offers a more thorough clean.

Your clear aligners are barely visible and can be worn during the day, but must also be worn overnight to achieve the desired results.

How long does PlusDent treatment take?

PlusDent claims that treatment will take between 4 and 10 months in total. Your treatment will take more than 6 months if you require considerable movement but typically takes less time for those that need minor adjustments.

Are there any other steps to take?

You only need to visit the clinic for your initial consultation, but it’s still very important that your treatment is monitored.

At regular intervals, you’ll be asked to provide an update in-app. Every time you move to new aligners, you must upload a photo of your teeth. Your photographs will be reviewed by PlusDent’s medical team.

PlusDent offers a satisfaction guarantee, but you’ll only be eligible if you’ve provided all your updates.

How much does PlusDent treatment cost?

PlusDent treatment costs between £1,390 and £2,190. The price of your treatment will depend on the complexity of your case.

3D scan

To start your treatment, you will need a 3D scan in a clinic. The scan and consultation are completely free of charge.

Treatment

If you are paying up-front for your treatment, you’ll be quoted one of three separate prices.

Short treatment, for the easiest cases, costs £1,390.

Most people will pay for the standard treatment, at £1,890 in total.

For the most challenging cases, £2,190 covers the longer course of treatment.

Replacements

If you lose an aligner, or it gets damaged, you will need to pay for a replacement. Replacement aligners come at a cost of £49 a tray. These aren’t the most expensive replacements on the market but could be an unexpected cost.

If you need a replacement, you’ll have to use an old tray until your replacement arrives.

Retainers

Once your treatment is complete, you will need retainers to keep your teeth in their new positions. A set of retainers will cost £99.

You’ll need to wear retainers in place of your aligners for the first two weeks after treatment. After this, they must be worn for 12 hours of every 24. Most people choose to wear their retainers at night.

Retainers don’t last forever. You’ll need a new set roughly every 6-12 months. This represents an ongoing lifetime cost of almost £200 a year.

Are payment options available?

Payment plans are available for most PlusDent customers.

You can choose to spread the cost over 1-4 years.

Monthly payments on a 4-year plan are between £30-55, depending on the length of your treatment.

Over 1 year, you’ll pay roughly between £105-£190 per month.

The most you will pay, for complex treatment with the cost spread over four years, is £2,619 in total. Spreading your payments will add over £400 to the price.

Is a warranty or guarantee available?

PlusDent offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. This is available as long as you’ve followed your treatment plan properly, including providing regular photographs and updates each time you change aligners.

If you reach the end of your treatment and don’t see the results you were promised, you’ll be able to continue at no extra cost until you’ve got the smile you expected.

How old do you have to be?

You must be at least 18 years old to have PlusDent dental aligners.

Where is PlusDent treatment available?

In the UK, there are PlusDent partner clinics in many locations including Bath, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hartlepool, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Southampton and more. View the full list here. You will only need to visit the clinic for your initial consultation. After this, the rest of your treatment can be managed at home.

What about customer service?

You’ll meet the PlusDent team during your initial consultation. This is your chance to talk to the dentists and ask any questions you have. Throughout the rest of your treatment, everything is managed in-app. You’ll provide regular photographs that will be reviewed remotely by the team.

If you have any questions, you can contact PlusDent by email at any time.

PlusDent: The Verdict

Availability

To start your treatment, you will need to visit one of PlusDent’s clinics. There are clinics all over the UK (except for Northern Ireland) so access is pretty easy. There is no option to make moulds at home, using a home impression kit.

Once you’ve started your treatment, in-app management is absolutely essential. You’re required to send updates through the app, and won’t be eligible for any guarantee if you don’t. If you’re not comfortable using your smartphone, this won’t be the company for you.

Price

If you’re a particularly easy case, you could pay less with PlusDent than many of the company’s competitors. A short course of treatment is very affordable, especially if you can pay upfront.

For more complex cases, PlusDent aligners may be more expensive than some others.

PlusDent’s price scaling benefits some but is a drawback for others. Some people will like the fact that their pricing is personalised, whilst others will prefer a set cost for treatment for everyone.

If you’re a particularly easy case, you could pay less with PlusDent than many of the company’s competitors.

Adding up to £400 to the cost of your treatment, you can choose from a variety of monthly payment options. Pay for treatment over up to 4 years, spreading the cost to make your aligners more affordable. You could pay as little as £30 a month for your new, straighter smile.

Watch out for the extra costs that you might have to pay during treatment. Replacement aligners come at a cost, whilst your retainers after treatment may set you back an extra £99 per year.

One of the best things about PlusDent treatment is that your assessment is free. You won’t have to pay for a 3D scan or to find out if you’re eligible.

Ease of use

Without home impression kits, you can be sure that there are no mistakes during the mould-taking process. A 3D scan will be used to make your clear aligners. If you’re not eligible, you won’t pay a thing and can go away having only lost your time. If you are eligible, you’ll be sent the aligners in the mail once they’ve been made.

If you’re not eligible, you won’t pay a thing and can go away having only lost your time.

You’ll be sent all of your aligners at once. If you’re self-disciplined, this may be a very convenient option. The app will tell you when it’s time to move on to your next set of aligners. If you’re likely to be tempted to switch too early, or might forget to check your phone, then having to take that level of control may be a problem for you.

Having all of your aligners delivered at once means that you won’t be waiting by your door. You don’t need to accept regular deliveries, and everything is ready when you need it. If you’re going on holiday, you can take your next aligners rather than waiting until you’re back home. Just be sure that you keep them somewhere safe, as a whole new set of aligners for your treatment will cost you an enormous amount.

Options

You might have a lot of choice regarding payment methods but won’t get that choice with your treatment. PlusDent provides just one aligner type, suitable for every single customer. Your aligners will be custom-made at a Berlin lab and should be worn for approximately 22 hours every day.

The length of treatment will depend on how much movement your teeth need. You’ll be given expectations in your treatment plan, along with the price of your treatment.

Reassurance

PlusDent offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

At the start of your treatment, you’ll receive a detailed personal treatment plan. You’ll be shown 3D images of the expected results. If you’re happy and choose to go ahead, this is what you’ll be working towards.

As your treatment ends, if you’re not happy then you can ask for it to continue. This won’t cost any more, but will only be offered if you’ve provided all the updates you’re required to. Every time you switch to a new set of aligners, you must upload some photos of your teeth. If you’ve kept up your end of the bargain, PlusDent will provide you with further aligners to get the results you were promised.

PlusDent FAQs

How long will PlusDent treatment take?

If you want straighter teeth without years of treatment, clear aligners are a sensible choice. Most providers can treat a majority of patients in a total of less than 12 months. PlusDent is no exception, saying that most of their patients will be treated for somewhere between 4 and 12 months. The exact length of your clear aligner treatment will depend on the issues you’re resolving. If your teeth only need to move a small amount then your treatment won’t take very long at all, though you’ll find that you might wear aligners for longer if your smile needs a little more work.

Are PlusDent treatment payment plans available?

You can spread the cost of PlusDent treatment with a payment plan to pay in instalments. You can choose to spread the cost of your treatment over up to 48 months. This could mean that you’re paying less than £30 per month for straighter teeth. You may be offered interest-free payments. This means that you’ll pay the same whether you’re paying upfront or committing to a regular Direct Debit from your bank account. Payment plans are provided by a third-party company, rather than PlusDent themselves.

Where are PlusDent clinics?

PlusDent practices are located in England, Scotland and Wales. You’ll need to visit your nearest clinic to get your treatment started. There are many partner clinics across the UK. You’ll start your PlusDent treatment with a 3D scan at a clinic of your choice. This will be used to check that you’re a suitable candidate. Once your scan is complete and you’ve agreed to your treatment plan, your 3D scans will be used to create your unique clear aligners.

Where and how are PlusDent clear aligners made?

PlusDent aligners are made from medical grade BPA-free plastic at a laboratory in Berlin, Germany. They’re created in line with strict health and safety requirements. Your 3D scans are sent to Berlin and your aligners are produced from these scans. Aligners are made to fit your mouth perfectly and to move your teeth slowly and carefully. Each set of aligners is custom-made. The clear plastic is sturdy and almost invisible, so you can get a straighter smile with discreet clear aligner treatment.

Do PlusDent results last forever?

There’s nothing to stop your PlusDent treatment from giving you a straighter smile for life. That said, you must look after your smile if you want the results to last forever. Your straighter smile will only stay at its best if you keep using retainers every night. At first, you should also use retainers through the day like a final set of clear aligners. PlusDent recommends that you wear your retainers day and night for the first six months. Afterwards, you can move on to wearing them only whilst sleeping. You’ll need to buy new retainers roughly every six months, as they’ll start to wear and degrade over time.

Am I a suitable candidate for PlusDent treatment?

Like all clear aligners, PlusDent aligners are designed for specific types of patient. They can fix overcrowding, crooked teeth and gaps, but only for mild and moderate misalignment issues. If you have more severe alignment issues, you may do better with another form of treatment. You’ll attend a PlusDent clinic for your initial consultation. You’ll be told if you’re a suitable candidate, so you won’t waste time or money on a treatment plan that won’t leave you happy with your smile.

How should PlusDent aligners be cleaned?

You can use an aligner or retainer cleaner for your PlusDent aligners. This is the most effective way to keep them clean and hygienic. Denture cleaners do the same job, so you can find suitable cleaning products in most major supermarkets. PlusDent recommends that you scrub your aligners with a toothbrush when cleaning them manually. You can use mild soap but shouldn’t use toothpaste as this can make your aligners cloudy. Use cold water when cleaning your aligners, since warmer water can cause the plastic to warp and lose some of its shape.

Can I get replacement PlusDent aligners?

PlusDent aligners are designed to be sturdy and stand up to daily wear and tear. Each set of aligner trays will only be worn for around two weeks in total. If your aligner breaks within those two weeks, or if you lose or misplace it, you’ll be able to get a replacement for an additional charge. Each replacement tray costs £49. If you’re waiting for replacement aligners, you’ll need to keep wearing the previous set until your replacements arrive. This will stop your teeth from shifting back towards their original position. Though PlusDent doesn’t recommend it, you might also consider moving on to the following trays a little early. Moving ahead may be temporarily more painful, but could allow you to get the same results without paying for replacements from PlusDent.

What is the minimum age for PlusDent treatment?

You must be at least 18 years old to become a PlusDent customer. Some providers of clear aligners will accept younger patients, as long as they have all of their permanent teeth. Most people don’t have all their adult teeth in place until they’re in their late teenage years, so a majority of patients wouldn’t be eligible until they're at least 18 anyway. If you want to start treatment before your 18th birthday, you may be a suitable candidate for one of PlusDent’s competitors.

What is the PlusDent app?

The PlusDent app is available to download on Android and iOS devices. It allows you to follow your treatment progression with personalised tips and information. You can use the PlusDent app to take photos of your progress and see how your teeth have moved so far. The PlusDent app is considered an essential part of your treatment. PlusDent professionals will monitor your images and track how tooth movement is progressing. Regular check-ins are great for motivation, but will also help to check that you’re on track. If the PlusDent team notice any issues, they may make some changes to your treatment.

I’d be interested because they seem to be a good price and quality but would prefer not to have to travel to London as I’m an hour from there. Are there any plans for Plusdent to come to other locations in the UK?

Hi Paul – we’re not sure if PlusDent definitely has any plans to expand to other locations but it’s likely they will in the future, as they’ve only been around in the UK for about 6 months.

Raising a merchant dispute. I have already received a partial refund & apologises. The problems are continuing: IT, Staff not having facilities & a very bad attitude on the phone. I actually to travel to there dentist in Manchester to reach the angles of my teeth, they are impossible by yourself. They don’t even reply to her urgent emails. It’s exhausting.
