Retainer Brite cleaning tablets

Our verdict

Retainer Brite is a sensible choice if you want a tablet soak and value knowing exactly what is in it. The instructions are specific, the persulfate warning is printed on the pack, and there is a firm 15-minute limit for wire appliances. The 96-tablet box is much cheaper per soak than the 36. Do not use it if you have had a reaction to persulfate cleaners, and if you wear branded clear aligners, check with your provider first, because aligner makers are cautious about denture cleaners and hot water.

Which product and pack

Retainer Brite is made by Dentsply Sirona Orthodontics in Sarasota, Florida. Older boxes and leaflets name Dentsply International Raintree Essix; it is the same product line. In the UK it is sold in boxes of 36 by dental retailers and in boxes of 96 on Amazon UK, where the listing is labelled "new formulation". Each tablet is individually wrapped.

The current ingredient list, on the December 2024 instructions and the Amazon UK listing, starts with sodium bicarbonate, corn syrup solids, sodium carbonate and citric acid, which make the fizz, followed by a potassium persulfate compound and sodium percarbonate, which do the oxidising, plus TAED, surfactants, flavour and blue colours. The safety data sheet identifies the persulfate compound as potassium peroxymonosulfate, at 10 to 30% of the tablet. A second Amazon UK listing and a 2022 laboratory study give a different list, with sodium perborate and EDTA. Both lists contain persulfate.

How to use it, and the temperature question

All versions of the instructions agree on the basics: one tablet, the appliance fully covered, 15 minutes, then rinse the appliance and your hands under running water. Wire appliances must not soak for more than 15 minutes. Do not mix it with other cleaners and do not reuse the solution.

The instructions disagree on water temperature. The 2018 and 2019 leaflets say "warm (not hot!)" water. The December 2024 instructions say 100 mL of water at or above 50°C, and the disinfection test results they quote were measured at 50°C for 15 minutes. Align Technology's Invisalign instructions say to keep aligners away from hot water. We have not found guidance that reconciles the two. Follow the instructions in the box you have, and before soaking clear aligners or clear plastic retainers, ask the clinician treating you, or check the instructions from the aligner or retainer maker, for a water temperature that suits that material. Dentsply's disinfection results apply only to the conditions it tested, 50°C for 15 minutes.

The allergy warning

The pack says the product is contraindicated for anyone allergic to persulfates, and that persulfates are a known allergen. The US Food and Drug Administration asked makers of denture cleansers to strengthen this kind of warning in 2008, after reports of severe reactions. It noted that a reaction may not appear on first use, or until after years of use, and that symptoms can include irritation, rash, hives, gum tenderness and breathing problems.

The FDA's adverse event database includes reports of allergic reactions in people using Retainer Brite, including one from November 2024 of irritation, itching and swelling around the mouth over three to four weeks. Individual reports do not show how common reactions are, but they are a reason to stop at the first sign of soreness, swelling or a rash, rinse the appliance well in plain water, and speak to a pharmacist, dentist or GP.

Clear aligners: what the evidence shows

Dentsply lists aligners among the appliances the tablets are for. Align Technology's current Invisalign instructions say not to use denture cleaners on aligners with mandibular advancement features, and an older edition, still handed out by some practices, said not to use denture cleaners on Invisalign aligners at all.

A 2022 laboratory study in Progress in Orthodontics soaked unused aligners in Retainer Brite, a budget tablet or a peroxide-free cleaner for 15 minutes a day for two weeks. Invisalign material showed no significant change in hardness or elasticity, but Retainer Brite caused small chemical changes on its surface. A PET-G aligner material became slightly softer with all three cleaners. This was a short laboratory test on new aligners. It does not show any effect on treatment, and its soaking schedule was a test condition, not a recommended home routine.

What the claims mean

The 2024 instructions say the tablets disinfect and remove plaque, with laboratory results against bacteria and yeasts held as the company's own data. Earlier leaflets cite a 2016 US laboratory test against four odour-causing bacteria.

These are laboratory results on contaminated devices under set conditions. They are not evidence that the appliance is sterile afterwards, and the tablets do nothing for your teeth or gums.

Cost per soak

The prorated column is the value of the tablets used by one soak a day for 365 days. The whole-pack column is the cash needed to buy enough boxes for that year at the same single-box price, which leaves tablets over. Neither includes delivery charges, and many people soak less often than daily. The instructions say daily use gives the best results. For comparison, Fancymay works out at about 8p a tablet and VITIS at about 21p.

Who should choose it

Choose Retainer Brite if you want a tablet with a published ingredient list, a clear wire time limit and a printed allergy warning, and buy the 96 box if you will use it regularly. Choose something else if you know you react to persulfates; one formula sold as VITIS lists no persulfate, but another does, so check the box.
